Waterfront Vision Plan

PHASE I GOAL: $113,894

The Waterfront

Since its inception in 1959, Hickory Cove has been blessed to be located on beautiful Lake Hickory. And for over 60 years, thousands of campers and guests have enjoyed swimming, canoeing, boating, and campfires at this same lake.

And although it’s created its share of lifelong memories for countless children, our waterfront has much more potential.

Potential for more fun activities for campers.

Potential for safer “play” areas for campers.

Potential for unique Bible teaching and worship experiences.

Potential for quiet moments with God while taking in stunning views of His creation.

Potential for significantly more opportunities to help equip children and teens to be lifelong followers of Jesus by making Hickory Cove more appealing as a summer camp, family camp, and guest group destination.

The Process

After completing a comprehensive master planning process with a Christian camp consulting firm in 2022, it was the firm’s recommendation to begin our master site plan by developing our waterfront area to enhance our programming and build organizational momentum. The following were recommendations for items of focus for waterfront development:

  • Amphitheater
  • Increase recreation options and amenities
  • Relocate docks to separate boating and swimming areas
  • Add large water toys (trampoline, swing, slide)
  • Walking path along shoreline

These recommendations were then shared with a local landscape architecture firm who helped us further develop a vision for our waterfront.

The Vision

The Waterfront Vision Plan delivered to us by our landscape architects not only provides a road map to new and exciting activities, safer “play” areas, stunning lake views, and reflecting spaces to spend time with God; but it also includes unique sleeping accommodations for families and guests.

In other words, this plan will truly “activate” our 60+ year old waterfront.

The following items highlight our Waterfront Vision Plan:

  • New dock
  • Tiny house lodges
  • Gateway pavilion
  • Amphitheater
  • Bath house
  • House boat “cabins”
  • Waterfront trail system
  • Rope swing
  • Water slide built into hill
  • Sunset deck

Given the extensive scope of the project, we will be following a phased approach to implement this plan. But ultimately, we will lean on God and see how He chooses to orchestrate this Waterfront Vision Plan.

The First Phase

Phase I of the Waterfront Vision Plan will consist of the following builds with the goal to have each of these completed by May 2024 so our summer campers can experience each of these new additions:

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

Hickory Cove’s current docks (two docks) are in need of major maintenance for functional, safety, and aesthetic purposes. Additionally, the current positioning of the docks is not ideal from a safety and programming perspective as boats must come directly through the swim/play area of campers in the water. (Campers currently are instructed to move to safe areas by lifeguards and staff when boats are docking/leaving.) The new dock will be positioned closer to the lake (further away from the cove) to keep boat traffic out of the camper swim/play area in the cove.

The new dock will include the following:

  • Boat slips
  • Jet ski storage
  • Canoe launch
  • Canoe storage
  • Roof top deck

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES/IMPACTS

  • Safer swim/play area in the cove for campers and guests
  • Increased space for lake “toys” (giant water inflatables, etc.)
  • Space to dock multiple boats and jet skis
  • Roof top deck creates:
    • Additional fun activity element for campers/guests (spot to jump into water from)
    • Additional lifeguarding post (and a prime lifeguarding post with increased visibility of swim/play area)
    • A unique lounging space for campers & guests
  • More aesthetically pleasing dock
  • More effective storage area for canoes
  • Easier canoeing access via canoe launch
  • Increases long-term revenue and ministry opportunities by making Hickory Cove more appealing as a summer camp, family camp, and guest group destination by expanding waterfront programming opportunities

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

Amphitheater build will include the following:

  • Built into existing hill behind Dining Hall and between Lake View Cabin and Chapel
  • View overlooking the lake
  • Bench seating for approximately 200
  • Cart accessible path to amphitheater
  • Stage at base of amphitheater near water for speakers, worship leaders, etc
  • Space for outdoor chapel for summer camps, family camps, and guest groups

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES/IMPACTS

  • Creates unique Bible teaching and worship experience for children, teenagers, and guest groups
  • Increases long-term revenue and ministry opportunities by making Hickory Cove more appealing as a summer camp, family camp, and guest group destination by providing additional lakefront experiences

GOALS/OBJECTIVES

  • Implement trail system running along waterfront between Chapel and cove
  • Design trails to incorporate stunning views of the lake
  • Create accessible areas off the trails for individuals and small groups to pray and spend time with God

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES/IMPACTS

  • Beautiful views of the lake for campers and guests to experience
  • Additional ministry opportunities for campers, families, and guest groups (prayer walks, devotion areas, etc.)
  • Increases long-term revenue and ministry opportunities by making Hickory Cove more appealing as a summer camp, family camp, and guest group destination by providing additional lakefront experiences

To ensure Phase I can be completed in time for our 2024 summer camps, we will need to raise $165,000 by Jan 12, 2024.
